Many people believe that visiting a Physical Therapist after orthopedic surgery is the best option. But what about before? Preventive Rehabilitation or “Prehab” can be just as important as post rehabilitation. By visiting Elite Physical Therapy prior to surgery, we can help:

  • – Minimize the pain of recovery
  • – Reduce post-op concerns and anxiety
  • – Manage expectations
  • – Improve mobility and strength
  • – Recover Faster

Always remember to consult with your healthcare provider to see if Prehab is an option for you! Or visit Elite Physical Therapy for a FREE screening to see how we can help.

Here is what one patient had to say about their prehab experience..

“Earlier in 2021, I was in extreme pain from osteoarthritis and a hip labral tear – at a pain level of 8/10 almost every day – with a 14 week wait to my surgery date (right hip replacement/direct anterior approach). A cortisone injection had only worked for 2 ½ weeks and I couldn’t see how I could survive the next 14 weeks until my surgery date.

I reached out to Elite Physical Therapy for help in pain reduction and to increase muscle strength in spite of the pain. I was pleasantly surprised how my plan of care reduced my pain level to about a 3/10 (with only Meloxicam and Tylenol daily) and gave me tools to move correctly while waiting for surgery. Not only did my Elite Physical Therapist, deliver on a great treatment plan, she educated me every step of the way and answered all my concerns. I went into surgery feeling prepared, knowing that I had definitely done all I could do to get my body ready for this life-changing surgery.

In just a few hours after my surgery, the PT staff at Miriam Hospital had me up and walking with a walker. They were amazed that I was able to walk 200 feet, and that my muscle strength was as good as it was so soon after surgery. I am now 1 week and 2 days post-op from a total hip replacement (right hip/direct anterior approach) and cannot believe how well I am moving. I am using only a cane, can go down the stairs normally and upstairs pretty easily with a cane, I’ve starting to go on short walks outside and continue to do the post-op exercise with my home PT. Even the home physical therapist is impressed at how strong my muscles are at this point.

“Pre-Hab” was a new concept for me. I cannot recommend it enough – and Elite knows how to do it! They created a plan of care that challenged me but was adaptable depending on my level on pain on any particular day. It’s wonderful to not feel arthritic pain anymore and to realize that surgical pain/swelling is subsiding daily as I move and my range of motion continues to improve each day. I can’t wait to be discharged from home PT so I can get back to Elite at Chapel View to start my rehab program there. I’m looking forward to a much happier and healthier 2022!” -P.M.
